Log inDestiny Clothing (Adenium obesum) The Desert Rose, also called the Japanese frangipani, is a small native succulent tree of Africa and Arabia that has fleshy leaves and develops a bulbous base. It produces large pink and white or red flowers when you get enough sunlight. The Desert Rose is popular as an ornamental plant but not often seen as a bonsai. It is popular in Southeast Asian countries, especially in Thailand. The plant is vigorous and healthy under appropriate conditions and with proper care. Desert Rose Bonsai is easily adapted to the cultivation in a pot, which makes it well suited for bonsai, although a highly branched structure does not grow. During the winter the plant will lower its leaves except in special tropical climates. The desert rose sap is poisonous. If you need help identifying your tree, try our guide. Specific Bonsai Care Guides for the RosePlacement of Desert: In a warm climate, the Desert Rose can be kept out of the entire year. In temperate climates, it can be placed outside in a sunny position or semi-shade from May to September. From autumn to spring the tree needs a warm place in the house or greenhouse with a lot of light. The temperature should not fall below 5° C / 40° F. In most cases the Desert Rose will fall its leaves in winter. Water: The Desert Rose is a succulent plant, indicating that it does not need much water. Usually you need to water only every 7 to 10 days - it is important to let the soil dry a bit between watering. Fertilization: Use liquid fertilizer at half of the recommended strength once a month of spring to autumn. In winter the tree does not need to be fertilized unless new shoots are still growing actively. When stored outside, a solid and organic fertilizer may be applied instead of liquid fertilizer. Pruning and wiring: You can rot the Adenium Bonsai all year. The flowers appear in new buds, so the time goes well. Pruning stimulates more branching and, as a result, more flower buds to develop. Cut the long shoots and cut the damaged parts, making clean cuts right above a node of leaf or union. To avoid the leap of poisonous milk, you better use gloves when you work on the plant! When you wire the branches do not wind the wire too tightly so that the branches can grow thicker without the wire marks remaining on them. Adenium scars easily from tightly applied wire. Repotting: Replenish every two or three years at the end of spring with root pruning. A mixture of well-wrapped soil is needed as excessive humidity is a safe way to kill the Desert Rose. As with all the succulent, before repotting let the soil dry a little, and wait with irrigation until a few days after the repotting. Propagation: The Desert Rose tree can spread from seeds and cuts, but grafting is the most popular method of propagation (especially in the major nurseries in Southeast Asia). Weights and diseases: Amphibis, haciners and mites can attack the desert roses that are weakened by bad conditions. Good care will prevent most infestations. If your tree is affected by a pest make sure you share some photos in our forum so that we can help you find a suitable product. For more detailed information on these techniques, try our section.
